About the Role: Cake Decorator
As a Cake Decorator at Costco Kelowna, your primary focus is producing high-quality, visually consistent baked goods for the sales floor and for member special orders. You’ll frost and fill cakes using a spatula, pipe decorative borders and figures using pastry bags and tips, and write personalized messages on cakes — all following Costco’s formulas, patterns, and production procedures. You’ll also handle cheesecakes, apply toppings, and work with fresh fruit for garnishing.
Beyond decorating, you’ll be responsible for keeping your work area clean and organized, following all safety and security procedures, and providing courteous service to Costco members. You’ll also pitch in with general bakery duties as needed, making flexibility and teamwork an important part of the day-to-day routine.

Responsibilities
The Cake Decorator role at Costco involves a variety of hands-on tasks within the bakery department. From slicing cakes and applying fillings to piping detailed decorations and boxing finished products, each responsibility plays a key role in delivering a consistent, high-quality product to members.
- Frost and fill cakes by applying filling between layers and frosting exteriors using a spatula
- Decorate cakes using pastry bags and tips to create borders, figures, and personalized writing following Costco formulas and patterns
- Read and interpret member special orders to determine the correct flavours, colours, decorative patterns, and personalized messages; contact members if instructions are unclear
- Prepare cheesecakes by removing them from baking pans, placing them on cake pads, applying toppings with a spatula, and garnishing per Costco standards
- Slice cakes by hand using a 16″ knife or slicing machine, and place on pre-cut cardboard cake pads
- Operate a whipping cream machine and slice fresh fruit for application to baked products
- Assemble and box finished cakes into cardboard cake boxes, then transfer to cooler, freezer, or wrapping area
- Maintain a clean and organized decorating area, adhering to all safety and security procedures
- Assist with other bakery duties and warehouse areas as needed
Requirements / Skills
Costco is looking for a candidate who takes pride in their work and can consistently produce cakes that meet the department’s quality and presentation standards. Candidates with prior cake decorating experience will be given preference, making hands-on bakery or pastry experience a real asset here.
- Cake decorating experience is preferred and will be given priority during candidate selection
- Food Safety Certification — Level 1 is required on your first day in the position
- High School Diploma or GED is preferred
- Attention to detail when following Costco’s formulas, decorating patterns, and production procedures
- Physical dexterity to handle pastry bags, spatulas, and decorating tips with precision
- Member service skills — able to communicate clearly and courteously with Costco members
