Day to day, you’ll be helping members find the right eyeglass frames and lens options, processing transactions, fitting eyeglasses, and keeping the department stocked and clean. It’s a role that blends customer service, technical fitting work, and general warehouse operations.
About the Role: Optical Student
As an Optical Student at Costco Surrey, you’ll work directly with members to guide them through their eyewear choices and provide prompt, courteous service throughout the process. You’ll also handle point-of-sale tasks including cash handling, cheque processing, and credit and debit transactions, following proper procedures at every step.
Where permitted by provincial law and under the supervision of a licensed Optician, you’ll fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and manual adjustments. The role also involves stocking merchandise, maintaining department standards for record keeping and product storage, and keeping the workspace clean and organised.

Responsibilities
Working in Costco’s optical department means wearing several hats — from member-facing service to back-of-house stocking and cleaning. Each responsibility plays a part in ensuring the department runs smoothly and members leave satisfied with their experience.
- Assist members in selecting eyeglass frames and lens options, providing prompt and courteous service throughout
- Process transactions accurately, including cash, cheque, credit, and debit payments following proper procedures
- Fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and manual bending techniques, under the supervision of a licensed Optician where permitted by provincial law
- Order supplies and merchandise by keying into the computer system and following safety and security procedures
- Stock merchandise and maintain department standards for production, record keeping, merchandising, and product storage
- Clean the department through spraying, wiping, and mopping; empty trash and operate the trash compactor and cardboard bailer
- Assist in other areas of the warehouse as needed
Requirements / Skills
Costco is looking for candidates who are already on their path in the optical field — specifically those with the proper provincial licensing and college registration in place. A willingness to learn and deliver excellent member service is essential in this role.

- Registration in the applicable provincial college for optical students is required
- High School Diploma or GED is preferred
