Optical Student – Costco – Burnaby, BC

This Optical Student position at Costco is based at the Burnaby, BC warehouse location and pays $27.00 per hour. The role supports the optical department under the supervision of a licensed Optician.

Day to day, you’ll help members choose eyeglass frames and lens options, ring up orders and over-the-counter merchandise, and fit and adjust eyeglasses after orders are picked up. You’ll also stock merchandise, clean the department, and order supplies through the computer system.

About the Role: Optical Student

A significant part of this position involves member service: helping customers select frames and lens options, processing payments accurately (cash, cheque, credit and debit), and following proper cash-handling procedures. Prompt, courteous service is expected throughout.

Where permitted by provincial law, and under the supervision of a licensed Optician, you’ll fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and by bending with fingers. You’ll also order equipment, merchandise and supplies by entering data into the computer system, and follow all safety and security procedures.

Department upkeep is part of the regular routine: stocking merchandise and supplies, following procedures for production, record keeping, merchandising and product storage, and cleaning by spraying, wiping and mopping. Emptying trash and operating the trash compactor and cardboard bailer are also included. You may be asked to assist in other areas of the warehouse as needed.

Responsibilities

• Assist members in choosing eyeglass frames and lens options, providing prompt and courteous service throughout
• Ring up orders and over-the-counter merchandise; receive accurate payment and make change; process cheques, credit and debit charges according to proper cash-handling procedures
• Fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and by bending with fingers, where permitted by provincial law and under the supervision of a licensed Optician
• Order equipment, merchandise and supplies by keying into the computer system; follow all safety and security procedures
• Stock merchandise and supplies; follow department procedures and standards for production, record keeping, merchandising and product storage
• Clean the department by spraying, wiping and mopping; empty trash and operate the trash compactor and cardboard bailer
• Assist in other areas of the warehouse as necessary

Requirements / Skills

A current provincial licence and registration in the applicable college are required for this role. No prior experience or specific knowledge is listed as a requirement, though a high school diploma or GED is preferred.
