Data Center Technician (English, French) – Google – Montreal, QC

Montreal is home to one of Google’s data centre operations, and the team is looking for a Data Center Technician who’s comfortable working with cutting-edge physical infrastructure. This is a hands-on, technically demanding role where you’ll keep the hardware backbone of Google’s services running smoothly — from servers and networking equipment to complex infrastructure installations.

This isn’t a desk job. As a Data Center Technician at Google’s Montreal, QC facility, you’ll be on the floor configuring, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining the physical infrastructure that powers one of the world’s most used technology platforms. The work is both physically and technically engaging, with every day presenting new challenges to solve.

About the Role: Data Center Technician

Working within Google’s Hardware Operations team, you’ll install, configure, test, troubleshoot, and maintain servers, server components, and networking hardware — including routers, hubs, bridges, and switches. You’ll also work with Google’s Linux cluster environment and take ownership of more complex networking protocol configurations. Participation in or leadership of small project teams on larger installations is part of the day-to-day, as is developing contingency plans when needed.

Physical readiness matters here — the role regularly involves manual movement of racks and equipment, requiring the ability to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and sustain physical effort over extended periods, including bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting. You’ll also need to be available for non-standard hours including nights, weekends, and holidays, as the data centre operates on a shift-based schedule. A critical requirement of this position is obtaining or currently holding a valid Reliability Status security clearance from the Government of Canada.

Responsibilities

As a Data Center Technician, your work directly supports the reliability and performance of Google’s infrastructure. Every task — from deploying new hardware to performing preventative maintenance — contributes to keeping Google’s services available for users around the world.

• Deploy and operate new data centre infrastructure across various projects and functions
• Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment and infrastructure issues, reporting problems and following established data centre procedures to resolve them
• Maintain data security by tracking various forms of media and ensuring data is handled in accordance with Google security standards
• Disassemble end-of-life equipment through part replacement or maintenance, working collaboratively in a team setting
• Repair and perform preventative maintenance on servers, machines, and infrastructure based on identified issues with defined solutions
• Install, configure, and test hardware components including networking equipment such as routers, hubs, bridges, and switches
• Participate in or lead small project teams on larger infrastructure installations, including developing project contingency plans

Requirements / Skills

Google is looking for a technically capable candidate who can thrive in a physically active, fast-paced data centre environment. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively on a shift schedule are essential to success in this role. Bilingualism is a firm requirement given the client relationship management responsibilities in the Montreal region.

• Component-level repair experience on technical or IT equipment is required
• Troubleshooting experience with operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols is required
• Physical capability to lift/move 50 lbs (23 kg) and sustain physical effort over extended periods
• Bilingual fluency in English and French is required to support client relationship management in this region
• Reliability Status security clearance from the Government of Canada must be obtained or currently held
• Availability for non-standard hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays on a shift-based schedule
• Preferred: 2+ years of hands-on troubleshooting experience with operating systems, server hardware, or networking; data centre or NOC environment experience; and a bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
