Research Intern, PhD, Summer 2027 – Google – Montreal, QC

Google is looking for PhD Research Interns to join their team across Montreal, QC, Toronto, ON, and Waterloo, ON for Summer 2027. This is a paid, full-time internship running 12–14 weeks, designed for doctoral students in their penultimate academic year who are ready to work at the cutting edge of computer science research.

As a Research Intern, you’ll collaborate directly with developers to create experiments, prototype implementations, and design architectures addressing challenges in artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language understanding, computer vision, and more.

About the Role: Research Intern, PhD

This internship places you at the heart of Google Research, where the work you do has a direct path to influencing products like Search, Maps, and Google Cloud. You’ll develop and execute your own research agenda, contribute to an innovative team environment, and gain exposure through an executive speaker series and community-building events throughout the summer.

Google Research teams share their findings openly — publishing in academic journals, releasing tools as open source, and applying discoveries directly to Google products. As an intern, you’ll be part of that tradition, working alongside peers and managers who are tackling some of the most complex technical problems in the industry today. English proficiency is required, and you must be located in Canada for the full duration of the internship.

This is a paid internship with a stated compensation of $120,000 CAD annualised (plus a 0% bonus target). Responsibilities

As a Research Intern at Google, your day-to-day work will centre on pushing the boundaries of what’s technically possible. You’ll be embedded in research teams tackling real problems at massive scale — from AI and machine learning to data management and computer architecture — with direct input into how that research is shaped and executed.

• Develop and execute an original research agenda aligned with your area of expertise
• Create experiments and prototype implementations to test hypotheses and validate approaches
• Design architectures and contribute to solutions across areas such as AI, ML, NLP, computer vision, and more
• Collaborate closely with developers, peers, managers, and partner teams to drive productive, innovative outcomes
• Contribute to Google’s tradition of open research, including potential publication in academic journals or release of open-source tools

Requirements / Skills

Google is looking for doctoral students who bring both deep technical expertise and a collaborative, curious mindset. The strongest candidates will have hands-on research experience and a demonstrated ability to contribute meaningfully to the computer science community.

• Enrolment in a PhD programme in Computer Science, Linguistics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Natural Sciences, or a related technical field
• Experience in one area of computer science such as Natural Language Understanding, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Algorithmic Foundations of Optimization, Quantum Information Science, or Data Science
• Penultimate academic year standing preferred, or returning to a degree programme after the internship
• Currently attending a degree programme in Canada and available to work full-time for 12 weeks outside of university term time (preferred)
• Research experience — including internships, full-time research roles, or lab work — is a strong asset
• Contributions to research communities, such as publishing papers at major conferences or in journals, are considered an advantage
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, or C/C++ is preferred
• English proficiency is required for this role
