Google’s research teams in Montreal, QC are looking for PhD students ready to spend a summer working on some of the most ambitious challenges in computing. This Research Intern (PhD) position for Summer 2027 is a 12–14 week paid internship that puts you right alongside some of the brightest minds in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer science.
This isn’t a typical internship. Research Interns at Google contribute directly to projects that shape products used by billions of people — from Search and Maps to Google Cloud infrastructure. Whether you’re building experiments, prototyping new architectures, or diving deep into data, you’ll be doing work that actually matters.
About the Role: Research Intern, PhD
As a Research Intern, you’ll develop and execute your own research agenda while collaborating closely with developers, researchers, and cross-functional partner teams. The scope of research at Google is remarkably broad — covering natural language understanding, computer vision, deep learning, machine perception, data mining, privacy, computer architecture, networking, operating systems, storage and data management, and much more.
Google’s research culture is rooted in openness and contribution to the broader scientific community. Teams regularly publish in academic journals, release tools as open source, and apply findings directly to Google products. Interns are expected to be active participants in this culture — contributing to a productive and innovative team environment alongside peers, managers, and collaborators.
Benefits and Salary
This internship offers a competitive annual equivalent salary of $120,000 CAD with a 0% bonus target. Responsibilities
Day-to-day, Research Interns are embedded in active research teams working on cutting-edge technical problems across Google. The work spans everything from crafting experiments to influencing the direction of real Google products — making it critical that interns are both independent thinkers and strong collaborators.
- Develop and execute a focused research agenda aligned with your area of expertise
- Collaborate with developers, researchers, and partner teams to drive progress on shared goals
- Create and run experiments to test hypotheses and validate research directions
- Prototype implementations and design system architectures for novel research ideas
- Contribute to a productive team culture, engaging meaningfully with peers and managers
- Apply research findings in areas such as AI, machine learning, NLU, computer vision, data mining, networking, and related fields
Requirements / Skills
Google is seeking PhD candidates who are deeply engaged with their field and ready to bring that expertise into a collaborative, fast-moving research environment. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in a technical research area and the initiative to drive a project forward independently.
- Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Linguistics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Natural Sciences, or a related technical field
- Experience in at least one area of computer science, such as Natural Language Understanding, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Optimization, Quantum Information Science, Data Science, or Software Development
- Penultimate academic year or returning to a degree program after the internship (preferred)
- Currently attending a Canadian degree program and available to work full-time for 12 weeks outside of university term time (preferred)
- Research experience, including internships, full-time roles, or lab-based work (preferred)
- Experience publishing or contributing to research communities, conferences, or journals (preferred)
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, or C/C++ (preferred)
- English proficiency required for global collaboration
