Optical Student – Costco – St. John’s, NL

Located at 75 Danny Drive in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Costco is looking for an Optical Student to join their optical department team. This role is a hands-on opportunity for someone registered with their provincial college and looking to gain practical experience in a member-focused retail optical setting.

Day to day, you’ll be helping members select eyeglass frames and lens options, handling transactions at the register, fitting and adjusting eyeglasses under licensed supervision, and keeping the department stocked and clean. About the Role: Optical Student

As an Optical Student at Costco, you’ll work directly with members to guide them through selecting eyeglass frames and lens options, ensuring every interaction is prompt and courteous. You’ll ring up orders and handle cash, cheque, credit, and debit transactions accurately, following proper procedures at every step.

Where permitted under provincial law, you’ll work alongside a licensed Optician to fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer. You’ll also be responsible for maintaining department standards, including stocking merchandise and supplies, following record-keeping and merchandising procedures, and keeping the workspace clean and orderly.

Responsibilities

• Assist members in choosing eyeglass frames and lens options with prompt, courteous service
• Process transactions accurately, including cash, cheque, credit, and debit payments following proper procedures
• Fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and finger bending, where permitted under provincial law and under the supervision of a licensed Optician
• Order equipment, merchandise, and supplies by entering data into the computer system
• Stock merchandise and supplies while following department procedures for production, record keeping, merchandising, and product storage
• Clean the department through spraying, wiping, mopping, emptying trash, and operating the trash compactor and cardboard bailer
• Follow all safety and security procedures throughout daily tasks
• Assist in other areas of the warehouse as needed

Requirements / Skills

Costco is looking for candidates who are currently enrolled in and registered with an applicable provincial college for optical training. A professional and service-oriented attitude is key, as this role involves regular direct interaction with members.

• High School Diploma or GED preferred
• Current Provincial licence required along with active registration in the applicable college
• Member service skills — ability to assist members in a courteous and efficient manner
• Basic computer skills for entering orders and inventory data
• Ability to handle cash and process payments accurately using proper procedures
