Software Developer Intern (MS, Summer 2027) – Google – Waterloo, ON

About the Role: Software Developer Intern, MS

As a Software Developer Intern, you’ll be assigned to a project that directly supports Google’s technical needs — whether that touches AI systems, distributed software, large-scale applications, or platform infrastructure. You’ll be expected to design, test, deploy, and maintain real software solutions — not toy problems. The work spans everything from optimizing algorithms to building automation tools, and your contributions will have genuine impact.

If matched to the Site Reliability stream, you’ll focus on keeping business-critical systems running at scale — from diagnosing traffic anomalies at the code level to building new monitoring and automation infrastructure. Either way, you’ll be working alongside experienced Googlers who expect versatility and a willingness to tackle problems across the stack. English proficiency and being located in Canada for the full duration of the internship are both requirements of the program.

Responsibilities

This role puts you in the middle of real engineering work at one of the world’s most technically ambitious companies. Whether you’re on the software development track or the site reliability track, your day-to-day will involve solving complex problems, contributing to production-level code, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The work is hands-on from day one.

• Develop scripts to automate routine tasks and streamline engineering workflows
• Analyse information and evaluate results to identify the most effective solutions to technical problems
• Apply computer science fundamentals from your academic training to real-world engineering challenges at scale
• Design, test, deploy, and maintain software solutions across the duration of your internship project
• Collaborate with peers, managers, and cross-functional teams to support and build effective working relationships
• Contribute to site reliability (if matched to that stream) — including monitoring, alerting, troubleshooting traffic anomalies, and building automation infrastructure

Requirements / Skills

Google is looking for technically solid candidates who are curious, adaptable, and ready to work on problems that don’t have obvious answers. You don’t need to have worked at a tech company before — strong academics, a passion for engineering, and genuine hands-on coding experience are what matter most here.

• Pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field (minimum qualification)
• Software development experience in two or more general-purpose programming languages such as C, C++, Java, JavaScript, or Python
• Experience with data structures and algorithms, whether through coursework, personal projects, or professional work
• Currently enrolled in a Canadian degree program and available to work full-time for 12 weeks outside of university term time (preferred)
• Proficiency in three or more languages from the following list (preferred): C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, Go, Python, TypeScript, or similar
• Experience in relevant technical domains (preferred): AI/ML, infrastructure, web or mobile application development, Unix/Linux, distributed systems, NLP, networking, or security software development
• English proficiency — required for all roles in this global program
