About the Role: Staff Software Developer, Protected Data SRE
Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) at Google combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems. The Protected Data SRE team ensures that Google Cloud’s services — both internally critical and externally visible — maintain reliability and uptime appropriate to customer needs, while continuously improving at a fast rate. Responsibilities
This role carries broad technical authority within the Protected Data SRE organisation. You’ll be expected to lead on both strategic initiatives and hands-on engineering decisions, working across infrastructure stacks and organisational boundaries to drive reliability outcomes.
- Drive strategy to reduce complexity ecosystem-wide, focusing on solution and component reuse to prevent new production risks
- Partner with executive-level stakeholders and cross-functional programmes to balance product reliability against regulatory deadlines
- Design company-wide capabilities for change safety, distributed observability, large-scale data repair, and control plane safety
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to developers in Waterloo, fostering a culture of collaboration across infrastructure stacks (from Spanner to Google Front End)
- Manage complex challenges of scale unique to Google Cloud, applying expertise in coding, algorithms, complexity analysis, and large-scale system design
- Optimise existing systems and build infrastructure, eliminating toil through automation
- Monitor systems capacity and performance with an ever-watchful eye on reliability and uptime
Requirements / Skills
Google is looking for a seasoned engineer who brings both deep technical expertise and the ability to lead across complex, cross-functional environments. The ideal candidate is comfortable operating at the intersection of systems engineering, software development, and organisational influence, and has a proven track record with large-scale distributed systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- 5 years of experience including product demand/supply planning, and production and inventory management
- 3 years of experience with Unix/Linux operating systems internals and administration (e.g., filesystems, inodes, system calls) and networking (e.g., TCP/IP, routing, network topologies and hardware, software defined networking)
- Programming proficiency in at least one of: C, C++, Java, Python, or Go
- Computer networking knowledge including DNS, load balancing, and routing
- Linux/Unix system administration experience
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field is preferred
