About the Role: Machine Learning Engineer, Software QA

In this position, you’ll take ownership of the entire ML evaluation lifecycle — from scripting and data parsing to running regression tests and filing bugs. You’ll work closely with the annotation operations team, analysing annotations and test results to verify that features work end-to-end for customers. Building and implementing workflow automation projects will be central to your day-to-day, as will developing requirements alongside cross-functional team members to establish the right testing processes and methodologies.

Responsibilities

As a Machine Learning Software QA Engineer on the Creativity Apps team, you’ll be involved in every stage of the testing pipeline — from early evaluation strategy through to final integration verification. Your work ensures that high-quality ML models are properly validated before they ship inside Apple’s creativity applications on iOS and macOS.

  • Define and execute evaluation strategy for machine learning features integrated into creativity applications
  • Develop and maintain evaluation scripts and automation frameworks to improve testing efficiency
  • Lead all stages of testing, including functional, regression, and end-to-end testing of ML-powered features
  • Triage and drive issues to resolution, filing detailed bug reports and tracking them through the development lifecycle
  • Parse and analyse annotations and test results to validate feature quality for end users
  • Collaborate closely with annotation operations teams and cross-functional engineers to develop testing requirements and processes
  • Leverage LLMs and Generative AI frameworks to automate model evaluation and optimise test execution times
  • Communicate progress and risk clearly through regular status updates to stakeholders

Requirements / Skills

Apple is looking for a technically strong, self-motivated engineer who brings both depth in machine learning and a rigorous approach to quality assurance. The ideal candidate is analytical and detail-oriented, comfortable navigating ambiguity, and capable of making well-reasoned decisions independently.

  • 5+ years of industry experience in quality assurance with a focus on machine learning
  • Strong understanding of ML algorithms, including supervised and unsupervised modelling techniques, deep learning, computer vision, NLP, and generative AI
  • Proficiency in Python and/or Swift or comparable programming languages
  • Experience preparing and collecting data for evaluation, with a focus on data quality
  • Prototyping and tools development experience in a QA or ML engineering context
  • Proficiency with LLMs and Generative AI frameworks to automate and optimise evaluation processes
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline
  • Bonus: Familiarity with iOS and macOS, and understanding of subjective/objective image and video quality evaluation and colour science
