Job Summary & Tips for Applying

AI-generated summary and tips to help you highlight your strengths effectively.

Quick Summary & What to Highlight: The Director, Merchandising Procurement at Canadian Tire in Toronto is a senior commercial leadership role responsible for procurement strategy, supplier negotiation and team management across a portfolio of merchandise divisions. Two requirements to put first on a resume are your record of leading complex supplier negotiations with measurable cost or margin outcomes, and your experience developing and leading procurement professionals in a matrixed retail or commercial environment.

Resume & Application Tips: Mirror the posting’s language: terms like should-cost analysis, vendor portfolio strategy, sourcing resilience and total commercial value are specific to this team’s work and worth using where they match your background. Quantify negotiation outcomes wherever you can, for example: “Led a category negotiation that reduced landed cost by 8% while securing improved payment terms across 12 vendors.” If you have experience with direct imports or owned brands, call that out separately, as the posting identifies it as a distinct area of responsibility.

Interview Preparation: Prepare two or three examples from your own work that cover complex supplier negotiations (what was at stake, how you built your position, what you achieved) and at least one that shows how you used analytics or financial modelling to shape a sourcing decision. Because the role manages teams and influences Merchandising VPs, be ready to speak to how you’ve built credibility with senior stakeholders who control category decisions. Worth asking: how the Merchandising Procurement team currently divides responsibilities with Global Sourcing, and where the Director’s portfolio sits within that structure.
