Customer Engineer, Data Management, Retail – Google – Austin, TX

Google Cloud is looking for a Customer Engineer, Data Management (Retail) to join its team across multiple U.S. and Canadian locations, including Austin, TX, Atlanta, GA, Chicago, IL, Seattle, WA, San Francisco, CA, Sunnyvale, CA, Addison, TX, and Cambridge, ON. This is a senior-level, customer-facing technical role where you’ll work at the intersection of enterprise database migration, cloud architecture, and strategic sales support.

At its core, this role is about helping organizations move away from legacy database systems and onto Google Cloud’s database offerings. You’ll collaborate closely with sales teams, product managers, and engineering groups to understand complex customer environments, identify migration opportunities, and design solutions that reduce risk and downtime. About the Role: Customer Engineer, Data Management

As a Database Management Customer Engineer, your work centres on guiding enterprise clients — including major retailers — through the process of migrating their legacy database portfolios to Google Cloud. You’ll be the technical bridge between what customers need and what Google Cloud can deliver, presenting solutions, building proof-of-concept work, and designing goal-state architectures that minimize migration effort, risk, and downtime. Day to day, you’ll engage with both technical stakeholders and executive leaders, blending deep technical knowledge with clear communication.

This isn’t a back-office role — you’ll actively drive business outcomes by working alongside sales Googlers to qualify and develop database migration opportunities. You’ll liaise with Product and Engineering teams to stay ahead of industry trends, contribute to enhancing Google Cloud products, and ensure that customers receive practical, reliable guidance through every stage of their cloud journey. Teamwork, problem-solving, and technical credibility are all central to success in this position.

Benefits and Salary

This role comes with a base salary range of $152,000–$222,000 USD, plus a 42.86% bonus target, equity, and a comprehensive benefits package. Benefits include health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, a 401(k) with company match, 20 days of vacation per year, 40 hours of sick time annually, 13 paid holidays, and generous parental leave including 28–30 weeks of maternity leave and 18 weeks of baby bonding leave. Individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll be working across technical and business dimensions simultaneously — identifying migration opportunities, designing architectures, and building trust with enterprise customers. The work requires both deep technical execution and the ability to communicate clearly at the executive level. Here’s what your day-to-day responsibilities look like:

• Identify and qualify business opportunities for database migrations in partnership with sales teams, while developing a thorough understanding of key customer technical and business challenges
• Inspire customers and peers to tackle difficult problems through creative solutions, including product briefings, proof-of-concept work, and coordinating technical resources
• Design goal-state architectures and migration strategies that minimize effort, risk, and downtime for customers transitioning to Google Cloud
• Demonstrate and prototype database migrations into Google Cloud offerings within customer and partner environments
• Recommend integration strategies, enterprise architectures, platforms, and application infrastructure using Google Cloud best practices
• Liaise with Product and Engineering teams to stay current on industry trends and contribute to enhancements of Google Cloud products

Requirements / Skills

Google is looking for a candidate who combines deep database expertise with strong communication and customer-facing experience. You should be comfortable presenting to both technical teams and executive stakeholders, and confident navigating complex migration projects. The right person brings both hands-on technical skill and a consultative mindset.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience (Master’s in Computer Science or technical field preferred)
• 10+ years of experience with database administration or cloud-native architecture in a customer-facing or support role
• Oracle or DB2 expertise including PL/SQL development, administration and management tools, and performance tuning techniques
• Oracle or DB2 to PostgreSQL migration experience, including schema/code conversion tools, zero-downtime strategies, and regression testing automation
• Experience engaging with technical stakeholders and executive leaders, and leading live demonstrations of database products
• Knowledge of cloud-based database architectures (e.g., GCP), DevOps principles, and distributed or big data technologies is a strong asset
• Background in technical sales or consulting in systems integration, data transfer and management, or enterprise database performance is preferred
