About the Role: Technical Operations Manager, Data Center Tech

As the Technical Operations Manager, you will oversee the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of critical systems including UPS systems, generators, electrical distribution, HVAC, and water treatment systems. You’ll work alongside technicians on the floor, reading blueprints and schematics, conducting system tours, and keeping infrastructure running at peak performance. Your day-to-day will span everything from routine maintenance to responding to abnormal conditions and managing recovery from failures.

This role demands a candidate who champions best practices and operational efficiency. You’ll identify opportunities to reduce costs without compromising performance, ensure environmental and safety standards are consistently met, and take ownership during emergency situations or outages. Responsibilities

This role sits at the intersection of hands-on technical work and operational leadership. You’ll be accountable for the reliability and uptime of critical data centre infrastructure while guiding technicians and coordinating with cross-functional teams. Every decision you make has a direct impact on the performance and availability of Google’s global services.

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair data centre systems including piping and non-critical electrical or mechanical components
  • Provide daily assistance to technicians by reading blueprints and schematics, conducting system tours, and assessing working order
  • Manage uptime and maintenance of water pumps, treatment systems, HVAC, UPS systems, generators, electrical distribution, and control and monitoring systems
  • Operate and monitor data centre facilities systems and respond promptly to abnormal conditions
  • Support startup, commissioning, and integration of new equipment and systems into the existing facilities infrastructure
  • Develop creative approaches to reducing operational costs while improving overall data centre efficiency
  • Manage performance issues and outages during emergency situations to minimize recovery time from failures

Requirements / Skills

Google is looking for a technically seasoned professional who brings both hands-on experience in industrial or commercial systems and the leadership capability to manage complex operations. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable on the floor with a multimeter and in a room communicating with contractors and engineering teams.

  • Associate’s degree, trade school certification, or equivalent practical experience in a related technical field
  • 9+ years of experience in electrical, mechanical/HVAC, or controls/automation systems in an industrial or commercial environment
  • Ability to perform material handling tasks including lifting, carrying, or moving up to 50 lbs, and use of OSHA standard safety equipment including ladders, platforms, and PPE
  • Availability for non-standard hours and rotating/shift work schedules
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical experience
  • Preferred: 7+ years in controls/automation or a related field, with experience in data centres, hospitals, or power plants
  • Knowledge of data centre electrical and mechanical systems such as feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units, chillers, AHUs, and CRAC units
  • Troubleshooting experience using standard hand tools, digital metering, or calibration/diagnostic equipment
