About the Role: Software Developer Intern, PhD
Depending on your background and fit, you may be placed in either a Software Developer Intern track or a Site Reliability Intern track. As a Software Developer Intern, you’ll design, test, deploy, and maintain software solutions as part of a versatile and collaborative engineering team. You’ll apply your academic knowledge to real-world computer science challenges, from optimizing algorithms to developing tools for Google’s global infrastructure. Site Reliability Interns focus on code-level troubleshooting, monitoring, automation infrastructure, and keeping business-critical systems running at scale.
Google’s engineering teams work across products like Google Ads, Chrome, Android, YouTube, and more. Interns are expected to bring strong coding skills, problem-solving ability, and a readiness to grow within a high-performing environment. You’ll collaborate with peers, managers, and cross-functional teams throughout your placement. Note that participation requires you to be physically located in Canada for the full duration of the internship.
Benefits and Salary
This internship comes with a competitive annual salary equivalent of $120,000 CAD (pro-rated for the internship term), plus a 0% bonus target. Responsibilities
As a Software Developer Intern at Google, your day-to-day work will involve both independent problem-solving and close collaboration with engineering teams. - Collaborate with peers, managers, and cross-functional teams to support a productive and innovative engineering environment

- Analyse information and evaluate potential solutions to identify the most effective approach for complex technical problems
- Design, test, deploy, and maintain software solutions as part of the Software Developer track
- Troubleshoot traffic anomalies and maintain cutting-edge services, including monitoring and alert systems (Site Reliability track)
- Build new automation infrastructure to drive reliability and performance across Google’s systems at massive scale
Requirements / Skills
Google is looking for PhD candidates with strong technical foundations and a genuine passion for solving large-scale engineering problems. The ideal candidate is someone who can bridge academic research with practical software development and thrive in a fast-moving, collaborative environment.
- PhD enrolment in Computer Science or a closely related technical field is required, with a focus on software development
- Coding proficiency in at least one of: C, C++, Java, or Python is a minimum requirement
- Currently attending a degree program in Canada and available to work full-time for 12 weeks outside of university term time (preferred)
- Penultimate academic year standing or returning to a degree program after the internship (preferred)
- Research experience in areas such as algorithms, AI, machine learning, compilers, distributed systems, data mining, or networking (preferred)
- Strong foundations in computer science, data structures, algorithms, and software design (preferred)
- English proficiency is required for effective global collaboration throughout the program
