About the Role: Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier, On-call Relief

As an on-call relief carrier, you cover routes when needed rather than working a fixed schedule. You’ll need to learn local roads, customer locations, and delivery receptacles quickly, and keep that knowledge current as your assigned area changes.

Mail security is part of every shift: items must be safely secured in your possession at all times while on route. You’ll also wear Canada Post identification visibly during delivery and collection, and process products such as Change of Address Notifications, Damaged Mail, and Items Delivered Bills.

Because you supply your own vehicle, this position asks that your automobile meets specific cargo and equipment requirements before you begin. Being in an on-call arrangement means your hours will vary and depend on operational need.

Quick Summary & What to Highlight: The Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier, On-call Relief position at Canada Post in Edson is a temporary, on-call driving role where you deliver and collect mail across rural and suburban routes using your own vehicle. A candidate should put their valid Class 5 or G driver’s licence and delivery driving experience front and centre on their resume, along with any experience working independently on time-sensitive routes.

Resume & Application Tips: Because the posting requires a vehicle with specific cargo and equipment specs, include a short note on your resume confirming your vehicle meets the 100 cu ft cargo minimum and has a metal roof-top and accessory power outlet. Use the posting’s own terms: sorting, collecting and delivering mail and processing Canada Post products and services map well to previous courier, delivery or mail-route work. A concrete example on your resume helps here: for instance, “Completed up to 80 residential deliveries per shift with zero misdeliveries over a six-month contract” shows the accuracy and volume this kind of work demands.

Interview Preparation: Come ready with a specific example of a delivery shift you completed in difficult weather or heavy traffic, since the posting calls out operating a motor vehicle in all kinds of weather and traffic conditions as a requirement. You should also be able to speak to how you kept items secure and maintained accurate records while working on your own. Since the posting does not state a pay rate, it is worth asking what the competitive salary works out to per hour for on-call shifts, and how much advance notice you can typically expect before being called in.
