About the Role: Data Center Technician II

In this position, you’ll be responsible for deploying, operating, and maintaining data center infrastructure across various projects and functions. Day-to-day, that means installing and configuring hardware such as servers and their components, as well as managing server software including Google’s Linux cluster. You’ll also tackle the configuration of more advanced components like networks, routers, hubs, bridges, switches, and networking protocols. Expect to participate in or lead small project teams on larger installations, and to develop contingency plans when things don’t go as expected.

The role also carries a security component — it is a requirement that you obtain or currently hold a valid Reliability Status screening from the Government of Canada. This clearance is essential to the position, and failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate level of screening may affect your eligibility for the role. The physical demands are real as well: manual movement and installation of racks, frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs (23 kg) are all part of the job.

Responsibilities

Working on Google’s data center floor means your contributions directly support the infrastructure used by billions of people worldwide. Each task — from a routine maintenance check to a complex hardware repair — plays a role in keeping Google’s systems reliable and secure. Here’s what you’ll be doing on a regular basis:

  • Deploy and operate new data center infrastructure across multiple projects and functions
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment or infrastructure issues by following established data center procedures and applying the right resources to resolve them
  • Maintain data security by tracking various forms of media to check for standard security issues (e.g., ensuring data is properly erased) in accordance with Google’s security standards
  • Disassemble end-of-life equipment through part replacement or maintenance processes in a team setting
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on servers, machines, and infrastructure based on identified issues with defined solutions
  • Install and configure hardware including servers, components, routers, switches, hubs, bridges, and networking protocols
  • Participate in or lead small project teams on larger infrastructure installations and develop contingency plans

Requirements / Skills

Google is looking for a technically strong candidate who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, physically demanding data center environment. The ideal person brings hands-on hardware experience and thrives under non-standard schedules.   • Component-level repair experience — demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair technical equipment at the component level
  • Diagnostic experience in at least one of: operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols (2+ years preferred)
  • Physical capability to lift/move up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and perform extended physical activity including bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting
  • Availability for non-standard hours including weekends, night shifts, holidays, and rotating shift schedules
  • Data center or NOC experience is preferred — familiarity with the environment (e.g., Systems Administration, Network Deployment, Help Desk) is a strong asset
  • Government of Canada Reliability Status clearance — must be obtained or currently held as a condition of employment
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience is preferred, as is completion of the Google IT Support Professional Certificate
