About the Role: Vehicle Mechanic – Lead Hand

As a Lead Hand Vehicle Mechanic at Canada Post’s Regina depot, you’ll direct workload distribution, monitor productivity, and ensure vehicles meet road worthiness standards set by provincial and federal regulations, as well as Canada Post’s own fleet management requirements. You’ll inspect, diagnose, repair, and certify vehicles — all while keeping quality control and safety at the centre of everything you do.

Responsibilities

The Lead Hand Vehicle Mechanic role at Canada Post covers a broad range of mechanical and supervisory duties. Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for keeping the fleet in safe, road-worthy condition while guiding the team to meet operational timelines and quality standards. Here’s a breakdown of the core responsibilities:

• Inspect vehicles within the Canada Post fleet and complete required documentation according to municipal, provincial, and federal inspection schedules
• Certify road worthiness by conducting quality control inspections on repaired vehicles to confirm work meets Canada Post and provincial specifications before releasing to Operations
• Perform minor and major repairs in-shop or on-road across all types of postal fleet vehicles, within OEM and Canada Post specifications using hand tools, power tools, and automotive shop equipment
• Replace or overhaul defective parts with new components, ensuring reliability and safety across the fleet
• Schedule and supervise workflow through the vehicle service depot and contractors, with attention to quality, timeliness, cost-effectiveness, and accurate record-keeping in fleet management systems
• Manage parts inventory and ensure proper ordering within local and national purchasing agreements when a storeman is unavailable
• Report operational issues verbally or in writing to fleet management that could impact mail delivery
• Support driver training programs and provide input to Fleet Management on special operating requirements for new vehicles
• Maintain health, safety, and environmental standards by keeping the work area clean and free from hazards at all times
• Serve as first-line contact in the absence of the fleet management supervisor

Requirements / Skills

Canada Post is looking for a licensed, trade-certified mechanic who is currently active in the field and brings both technical expertise and a natural ability to lead others. The ideal candidate is dependable, takes initiative, communicates clearly, and thrives in a physically demanding, fast-moving environment.

• Secondary school diploma or equivalent as required by provincial standards
• Graduation from a technical training or apprenticeship program in motor vehicle mechanics and/or truck mechanics
• Valid Provincial Motor Vehicle Mechanic’s licence and/or Truck Mechanic’s licence — must currently be active in the trade
• Valid provincial driver’s licence with a driver abstract that meets current Canada Post corporate requirements
• Licence to operate a medium duty truck (5-ton) with air brakes
• Thorough knowledge of motor vehicle and heavy truck mechanics, diagnostic techniques, industry regulations, and fleet preventative maintenance programs
• Strong communication skills — ability to convey information both orally and in writing, including reports and escalations
• Basic computer skills for fleet management systems and documentation
• Ability to plan, organize, and control workload for a group of mechanics
