About the Role: Software Development Engineer 2
As an SDE 2 on the Amazon Kids team, you’ll own and drive customer-facing features across multiple platforms including Tablet, Kindle, and Fire TV. You’ll take software systems from inception through delivery — designing, architecting, and shipping features that shape the everyday experience for kids and parents alike. You’ll collaborate closely with product management and engineering leadership to design clean, simple solutions to complex problems.
This role requires a strong foundation in software design and architecture, including experience with design patterns, reliability, and scalability of both new and existing systems. You’ll help maintain production software, identify pain points, and drive your team toward meaningful improvements — while helping make the team more efficient and effective overall.
Benefits and Salary
Amazon offers a total compensation package that goes beyond base salary. For this position in Toronto, the base salary range is $114,800 to $191,800 CAD annually, with final compensation depending on experience, qualifications, and location. The package may also include sign-on payments and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). Responsibilities
As an SDE 2 with Amazon Kids, your day-to-day will involve solving meaningful technical challenges that directly affect how kids discover content and how parents maintain oversight. You’ll work iteratively with a cross-functional team, balancing feature delivery with system reliability across a range of platforms and services.
- Own and drive customer-facing features for the Kids experience across Tablet, Kindle, and Fire TV platforms
- Design and architect software systems from inception through delivery, ensuring scalability and reliability
- Build backend services that power content discovery, ordering, and parental approval workflows
- Develop web and app experiences that parents interact with through the Amazon Kids interface
- Collaborate closely with product management and engineering leadership to design simple, effective solutions
- Maintain production software in the field, identifying pain points and leading efforts to resolve them
- Contribute to team growth by helping make processes more efficient and the engineering environment more effective
- Iterate quickly while maintaining high software quality across the full development lifecycle
Requirements / Skills
Amazon Kids is looking for a candidate who combines hands-on engineering experience with a strong grasp of system design principles. You should be comfortable working across a full software stack and have a demonstrated history of shipping production-quality software. Preferred candidates will bring experience with the full software development life cycle and a relevant academic background.
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of experience in design or architecture of new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling
- Proficiency in at least one programming language used in a professional software development context
- Full SDLC experience (preferred), including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent (preferred)
