Principal Research Scientist, WW Sustainability – Amazon – Seattle, WA – $170,500 – $294,700/year
Join Amazon at the cutting edge of sustainability initiatives as a Principal Research Scientist in the Worldwide Sustainability (WWS) organization. This role focuses on driving technical strategy and innovation for Amazon’s long-term sustainability and climate commitments through AI & ML. As a strategic technical advisor, you will work with senior leadership to set next-generation modeling standards and tackle complex sustainability challenges.

The Sustainability Science and Innovation (SSI) team within WWS combines expertise in science, analytics, economics, statistics, machine learning, product development, and engineering to develop and evaluate innovations necessary for Amazon and its partners to meet long-term sustainability goals.

Key Responsibilities
- Drive technical strategy and innovation for sustainability and climate commitments through AI & ML.
- Serve as a strategic technical advisor to senior leadership.
- Set next-generation modeling standards and tackle complex sustainability challenges.
- Stay current with emergent sustainability and climate science trends.
- Collaborate with the Climate Pledge team to define strategies and influence investment.
- Play a key role in organizational planning, hiring, mentorship, and leadership development.
Basic Qualifications
- 15+ years of relevant, broad research experience post-graduate degree (or equivalent).
- Deep expertise in climate science, environmental science, and computational sustainability.
- Working knowledge in machine learning and artificial intelligence for sustainability and climate.
- Proficiency in programming for models, algorithms, and code reviews.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in climate science, environmental sciences, computational sustainability, mathematics, economics, or computer science (or related quantitative discipline).
- 15+ years of innovative climate science and climate tech research experience.
- 10+ years of experience building and deploying groundbreaking climate solutions at scale.
- Expertise across many climate science-based methodologies.
- Published research work in academic conferences or industry circles.
- Experience delivering complex end-to-end global forecasting systems.
- Experience working with real-world complex data sets and building scalable models from big data.
- Excellent business judgment and effective communication skills.
- Track record of successful projects in model development, algorithm design, and product development relevant to sustainability and climate tech.
- Experience with mentorship and/or management of senior scientists and engineers.
