Role of the Software Development Manager

As a Software Development Manager, your primary goal will be to lead a team building and improving systems that help Fulfillment Centers (FCs) operate efficiently. You will provide information and insights to FC operators and develop software services that rely on real-time information for planning and staffing. Your work will directly influence Amazon’s business and customer promise. You will be involved in all aspects of the software development cycle, including scoping, design, implementation, testing, and delivery of your product.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage engineering teams in the development and improvement of systems for FCs.
  • Partner with product managers, project managers, and user experience designers to deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Ensure systems provide aggregate data and build an end-to-end picture of FC state to aid key decision-making.
  • Participate in all aspects of the software development cycle, including scoping, design, implementation, testing, and delivery.
  • Travel domestically and internationally up to 20%.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience.
  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience.
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and existing systems experience.
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and live site operations.
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy.
  • Experience recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching, and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills and effectiveness.
