Amazon’s Alexa Audio team in Vancouver, BC is hiring a Software Development Manager (SDM) to help shape the future of how millions of customers discover, access, and enjoy music, podcasts, audiobooks, radio, and ambient soundscapes across all Alexa-enabled devices. In this role, you’ll lead a team responsible for Books & Classical Music features on Alexa, including the customer-facing experience for books on top Alexa+ LLM-based experiences. You’ll collaborate with senior leaders across Alexa, manage a complex roadmap, and leverage the latest AI-based tools and cross-platform frameworks to deliver seamless experiences across multiple device types.
About the Role: Software Development Manager, Alexa Audio
As an SDM within the Alexa Audio organization, you’ll be at the helm of a team tackling genuinely complex and ambiguous problems — from voice-driven content discovery across tens of millions of distinct audio items to seamless playback management and cross-device media control. You’ll be expected to set a clear technical vision, guide software development engineers (SDEs) through difficult architectural decisions, and ensure the team operates with both efficiency and innovation.
This role demands strong collaboration across internal stakeholders and away teams, as well as clear communication with senior leadership. You’ll be responsible for proposing and communicating trade-offs, keeping the roadmap aligned with customer impact, and ensuring timely visibility across all levels of the organization. Operational excellence, sound architectural instincts, and a track record of delivering at scale are central to success here.
Benefits and Salary
This position offers a base salary range of CAD $171,400 to $286,200 annually for Vancouver, BC. As a total compensation employer, Amazon’s package may also include sign-on payments and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). Final compensation is determined by experience, qualifications, and location. Amazon also provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, basic life & AD&D), a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), a Deferred Profit Sharing Plan (DPSP), paid time off, and additional resources to support health and well-being.

Responsibilities
Day to day, you’ll be leading a team that owns the Books & Classical Music experience on Alexa, guiding engineers through complex technical decisions and making sure the roadmap consistently delivers value to customers. These responsibilities span technical leadership, stakeholder management, and team development — all in service of building reliable, innovative audio experiences at scale.
- Lead and mentor a team of Software Development Engineers, setting the technical vision and guiding them through complex, ambiguous problems in audio experiences
- Own the product roadmap for Books & Classical Music features, proposing and communicating trade-offs to optimize customer value and business outcomes
- Collaborate with senior leadership across Alexa and with key internal and external stakeholders to align on strategic initiatives
- Drive delivery of Alexa+ LLM-based customer-facing book experiences across multiple device types
- Leverage Generative AI tools and cross-platform user experience frameworks to ensure your team operates efficiently and stays ahead of industry trends
- Ensure operational excellence through sound engineering practices, including code reviews, testing, source control, and livesite operations
- Communicate clearly with all stakeholders, including senior leadership, to provide timely visibility into roadmap progress and technical decisions
Requirements / Skills
Amazon is looking for an experienced engineering leader who has a proven track record building and scaling distributed systems, while also developing high-performing engineering teams. The ideal candidate brings both deep technical credibility and the leadership skills to align cross-functional teams around a shared vision.
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience, including recruiting, mentoring, and developing software engineers
- 7+ years working directly within engineering teams, with hands-on experience delivering complex software systems
- 3+ years of systems design and architecture experience, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling of new and existing systems
- 8+ years leading multi-tier web services definition and development across the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle
- Knowledge of engineering best practices including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams to align technical execution with business goals
- (Preferred) Strong communication skills with users, technical teams, and senior leadership for requirements gathering, product strategy, and technical design
- (Preferred) Experience managing and coaching engineering teams, improving their skills and helping them grow as product-focused software engineers
