FedEx is hiring a full-time Switcher (PH – Switcher FT) at their Woodbridge, Ontario facility. This position centres on the movement of trailers throughout the yard — hooking up, repositioning, and coordinating with the operations team to keep things running smoothly. When needed, you may also assist with loading, unloading, and sorting packages by hand. It’s physical, active work that plays a direct role in keeping FedEx deliveries on schedule.

About the Role: PH – Switcher FT

As a Switcher at the Woodbridge hub, your primary responsibility is trailer switching — that means hooking up parked trailers from the yard and moving them to load/unload doors, or repositioning them back into the yard. You’ll use the Yard Management System (or switcher cards where applicable) to document every move, and you’ll coordinate closely with management and central control to keep the yard flowing efficiently. Pre- and post-trip inspections on your switcher equipment are also part of your regular routine.

In addition to yard duties, you may be called upon to support package handling operations — including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling packages using proper hand-to-surface techniques. Safety is a top priority at FedEx, and you’ll be expected to follow all yard switching safety processes and procedures consistently. Working as part of a team in an environment that can involve varying temperatures, noise, and fumes is part of the job.

Responsibilities

• Perform trailer switches by hooking and moving trailers between the yard and load/unload doors
• Coordinate trailer movements with management and central control to maintain yard flow
• Document all trailer moves using the Yard Management System or switcher cards
• Complete pre- and post-trip inspections on all switcher equipment before and after each shift
• Follow yard switching safety procedures and demonstrate safe operating practices at all times
• Load and unload packages onto delivery vehicles, trailers, conveyor systems, and load gratings as required
• Sort packages by scanning labels, reading charts, verifying numbers, and directing to the correct conveyor system
• Handle packages using proper hand-to-surface methods throughout continuous, repetitive shift cycles of two to four hours

Requirements / Skills

FedEx is looking for a reliable, safety-conscious individual who can operate yard equipment confidently and communicate effectively in a team setting. While prior experience is not mandatory, candidates with a background in package handling or switching/CDL operations will have a clear advantage.

• Valid driver’s licence with the ability to maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) file
• Ability to follow instructions regarding work duties and safety methods clearly and consistently
• Package sorting accuracy — able to discern numbers and information to route packages correctly
• Basic equipment operation — comfortable using skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, chutes, and unloading devices
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment
• Physical capability to lift, carry, push, and pull packages on a repetitive basis throughout the shift
• Preferred: six months of experience as a package handler or in a switching/CDL operator role
