Optical Student – Costco – Scarborough, ON

Scarborough’s Costco Wholesale location on Warden Avenue is looking for an Optical Student to join their optical department team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone currently registered in a provincial optical college program who wants to gain hands-on experience in a busy, member-focused retail environment.

In this role, you’ll be working directly with members to help them find the perfect eyeglass frames and lens options, while also handling order processing, merchandise stocking, and general department upkeep. Every shift brings variety and the chance to sharpen your skills under the guidance of a licensed Optician.

About the Role: Optical Student

As an Optical Student at Costco’s Scarborough location, your primary focus will be delivering outstanding member service in the optical department. You’ll assist members in selecting eyeglass frames and lens options, ring up orders, process payments accurately, and support the smooth day-to-day operation of the department.

Where permitted under provincial law and under the supervision of a licensed Optician, you’ll also have the opportunity to fit and adjust eyeglasses — a valuable hands-on experience that directly supports your optical education. You’ll also play an important role in maintaining a clean, well-stocked, and organized department that reflects Costco’s high standards.

Responsibilities

The Optical Student role at Costco Scarborough involves a well-rounded mix of member service, optical fitting support, and general department operations. Each of these responsibilities contributes to a seamless and pleasant experience for every member who visits the optical department.

• Assist members in selecting eyeglass frames and lens options, providing prompt and courteous service throughout the process
• Process orders and payments accurately at the register, handling cash, cheques, credit, and debit transactions in accordance with Costco procedures
• Fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and finger bending techniques, where permitted by provincial law and under the supervision of a licensed Optician
• Order supplies and merchandise by keying requisitions into the computer system, ensuring the department stays well stocked
• Stock merchandise and follow department procedures for production, record keeping, merchandising, and product storage
• Maintain a clean department through regular spraying, wiping, mopping, emptying trash, and operating the trash compactor and cardboard bailer
• Support other warehouse areas as needed, demonstrating flexibility and team spirit

Requirements / Skills

Costco is seeking a candidate who is currently enrolled in their optical studies and holds the necessary provincial credentials. The ideal person for this role is detail-oriented, people-focused, and eager to apply their optical training in a real-world retail setting.

• Provincial optical licence — a current provincial licence is required for this position
• College registration — must be registered in an applicable optical college program
• High School Diploma or GED — preferred but not strictly required
• Member service skills — ability to assist and communicate with members in a friendly and professional manner
• Bilingual (French/English) — candidates applying to Quebec locations must be able to communicate in French (oral and written)
• Reliability and attention to detail — ability to follow department procedures, safety protocols, and performance standards consistently
