The work is fast-paced and technically demanding. You’ll be responsible for taking conceptual designs all the way through to full-scale production, collaborating with cross-functional teams including Design, Process, Manufacturing, Quality, Production, and Controls throughout the entire product lifecycle.

About the Role: Mechanical Design Engineer

In this position, you’ll lead and contribute to cutting-edge equipment development — balancing product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead times. You’ll create 3D CAD models, detailed engineering drawings using GD&T standards, mechanical BOMs, and safety documentation. You’ll also prepare motion studies and run FEA analyses on complex designs, drawing on a strong foundation in dynamics, force and stress analysis, and solid mechanics.

This role goes well beyond the drawing board. You’ll provide mechanical engineering support to fabrication, assembly, project management, and production teams — troubleshooting design issues, reviewing performance, and implementing enhancements to optimize machine performance. Flexibility to travel domestically and internationally is required, as you’ll be collaborating with global teams to support equipment development and deployment.

Responsibilities

As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Tesla, your day-to-day will involve driving equipment innovation from concept through production deployment. You’ll be a central technical voice across multiple teams, ensuring designs are robust, manufacturable, and aligned with Tesla’s high standards for automation and manufacturing intelligence.

  • Lead conceptual equipment development while carefully balancing product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time constraints
  • Contribute to the development of new and improved manufacturing processes, from proof-of-concept through to full-scale production
  • Drive improvements in equipment effectiveness, manufacturing tolerance, stability, automation, and intelligence
  • Create 3D CAD models, detailed drawings with GD&T, mechanical BOMs, and safety and maintenance documentation
  • Prepare motion studies and FEA analyses on complex designs, applying strong knowledge of dynamics, force and stress analysis, and solid mechanics
  • Select and integrate commercial components including sensors, servos, and pneumatic actuators
  • Review and provide feedback on performance, design simplicity, robustness, assembly, and installation
  • Support fabrication, assembly, project management, and production teams to troubleshoot design issues and implement performance enhancements

Requirements / Skills

Tesla is looking for an engineer who thrives under pressure, takes ownership of their work, and brings genuine curiosity to complex mechanical challenges. The ideal candidate has deep hands-on experience with electromechanical systems and is comfortable operating in a high-responsibility, fast-moving environment where attention to detail is non-negotiable.

  • 7+ years of experience as a hands-on mechanical, manufacturing, or design engineer working with mechanical and/or electromechanical systems
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, PDM, AutoCAD, and/or similar CAD/CAE software
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and drafting standards (e.g., ASME Y14.5) applied in real manufacturing contexts
  • Experience creating detailed drawings for various fabrication techniques including CNC/manual machining, welding, sheet metal forming, 3D printing, and mechanical assembly methods
  • Knowledge of automated equipment systems — robotics, vision systems, material handling, conveyors, PLCs, and more
  • Solid understanding of mechanics including pneumatics, hydraulics, dynamics, material selection, prototyping, DoE, and common machining and fabrication processes
  • Experience with new equipment installations, new product startups, and writing production documentation such as SOPs, checklists, and process flow diagrams
  • Flexibility to travel domestically and internationally as required
