About the Role: Engineering and Operations Technician (EOT)

As an EOT at AWS, you’ll serve as the primary technical liaison between Amazon and its colocation providers, overseeing the full spectrum of electrical and mechanical systems within the data centre. You’ll be responsible for equipment including diesel generators, switchgear, UPS systems, PDUs, AHUs, CRAHs, chillers, cooling towers, VFDs, and building automation systems — all of which underpin mission-critical server operations.

You’ll also play a leadership role in new construction and expansion projects, from design through commissioning, while maintaining thorough documentation and contributing to internal recruitment efforts. Crucially, this position requires that the selected candidate obtain and maintain an active Reliability Status security clearance with the Government of Canada. Bilingualism in French and English is also required for this role.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll wear many hats — from technical expert and supplier manager to project lead and emergency responder. Every responsibility you take on directly contributes to the reliability and availability of AWS infrastructure serving customers across Canada and globally. Here’s what a typical scope of work looks like:

• Serve as the primary business interface with colocation provider technical and facility teams to address day-to-day operational needs within the Availability Zone (AZ)
• Supervise on-site colocation providers and their contractors, ensuring all work complies with established practices, procedures, and local legislation
• Manage colocation suppliers for routine and emergency maintenance of critical systems including switchgear, generators, UPS systems, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, and building monitoring systems
• Generate change management requests and incident management tickets for data centre facility operations
• Respond promptly to on-call emergencies such as power failures or natural disasters, and refine Emergency Operations Procedures to improve effectiveness
• Conduct root cause analysis for operational incidents in collaboration with colocation providers and contractors
• Establish and maintain comprehensive English-language documentation for business and facility operations
• Lead new build and expansion projects through design, implementation, and commissioning phases to improve operational efficiency
• Maintain accurate data centre infrastructure inventory using internal dashboards and tracking matrices
• Assist in internal recruitment including conducting interviews and supporting new employee onboarding

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate brings both deep technical knowledge of critical facility systems and the interpersonal agility to manage vendor relationships and lead cross-functional projects. • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in facility management and the operation and maintenance of infrastructure equipment in critical facilities such as data centres, substations, hospitals, or industrial plants
• Knowledge of electrical systems used in critical data centre operations, including utility substation feeds, transformers, switchgear, VFI Class UPS, DRUPS, PDUs, ATS, STS, SLA/VRLA batteries, diesel/gas turbine generators, surge suppression, active harmonic filtering, battery monitoring systems, branch circuit monitoring, or SCADA systems
• Bilingualism in French and English is required due to the nature of interactions with Amazon entities globally and across Canadian provinces
• Active Reliability Status security clearance with the Government of Canada (or ability to obtain and maintain one)
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently, take initiative, and function effectively as a collaborative team player
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (preferred but not required)
